Guide to Aged Care Access

This page gives you a quick guide to Aged Care Access Resources in Australia. As well as handy links to Australian Government sites for aged care and seniors citizens.

Moving into a residential aged care home is a substantial and difficult decision, coloured by emotions and complicated by personal and financial considerations.

Strict regulation and monitoring, by the Federal Government, ensures high quality care is provided by all aged care providers, although the standard of accommodation may differ between care facilities.

At Arete our goal is to simplify this process and help you navigate this process to achieve the best outcome for your future. It is important to select an aged care home that is affordable and meets your care requirements.

There are five steps to accessing aged care services in Australia.

ACAT Assessment

The first step to entering aged care is to contact an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) on 1800 200 422 and discuss your needs.

An ACAT team member may subsequently visit you to independently assess your needs and determine the type of care for which you are eligible.

This includes (if required) providing an approval to enter residential aged care.

Complete the Means Test Assessment

The next step is to complete your Means Test Assessment.

The government will assess your income and assets to determine your eligibility for subsidised aged care. If possible, your assessment should be submitted before starting care. This ensures your income for aged care purposes, to avoid any confusion regarding your fees.

Starting residential care without an assessment may require you to pay the highest aged care fees.

Appoint a Nominee

If it is simpler, you may nominate an organisation or another person to act on your behalf.

They can complete aged care forms and deal with your matters. Your nominee can be changed at any time. Read more about having a nominee to deal with personal matters on your behalf.

Your Financial Contribution

The Government will assess your income and advise you of the fees payable.

In residential aged care there are 4 fee types which may be applicable:

  1. a basic daily fee
  2. a means tested fee
  3. accommodation costs
  4. fees for extra services
